Artistic Board Up Fire

EVD Brian Minutoli from Baltimore City Fire Department sent in these photos as a follow up to our recent post titled Artistic Board Up. The pictures are of a working fire in Baltimore City a few years ago in a building that had windows similar to the ones featured in our post. We forgot to ask Brian the details of the fire, so if anyone knows anything about it, please give us some of the details.

Wow! Isn’t amazing that not a single window is smoked up.

Hey who is the first due truck in this picture… its not 2 Truck, is it?

(backround…. 2 Truck was closed this year due to budget cutbacks)

Photo is from at least a year ago. 13 box on Wilson Street. That is Truck 2 (Rest in Peace) in the front.

Wow! No smoke in the windows and the fire is through the roof! This may be one of those times that we can fix the problem with a quick search and letting gravity do the rest. It will look nicer once the building, which the owner obviously cares so much for, is replaced with a green lot!

Fire on at least two floors and showing through the roof on an abandoned, and boarded up, building and your initial size-up and risk-benefit analysis tells you that you should take your crew in for a “quick search” before you let it burn to the ground? Not saying their couldn’t be any vagrants residing in there covertly, but I personally wouldn’t commit any firefighters that I am responsible for to an interior operation on this structure.

and thats why your not a BCFD fire officer

This is true. Unless you know for sure the building is empty (which you have no way of knowing) you have to make enrty.

100% true, If you can NOT confirm that there is no body inside then you must atleast give it a FAST primary… And besides it may be abandoned but we as Fireman LOVE to go inside and see whats cookin……….Everybody stay safe out there!!!! PTB-EGH

    ninjamedic,
Without knowing exacly what the building is I would have to at least try to search. If I open the front of the unit and find a postflashover fire then there is no one alive inside and I am happy to stay outside.

If this is a row house then it is possible that the units next to the fire could hold viable victims. Given the economic crisis it is possible that people or even families are in there. If this building is abandoned and the utilites are off (gas, water, power) then it is likely that the fire was caused by human activity as there would not be the normal sources of ignition.

Some of the run down neighborhoods had an urban renewal initiative to put plywood coverings on windows that were painted to make it look like real windows and have the appearance of rowhouses that were occupied.
