Mike Kiernan from Hamilton (NJ) sent in this interesting find he his Truck 13 crew led by Lieutenant Keith Greene recently came across. They were in an elderly woman’s home doing a smoke detector install when the lady started telling them about her departed husband. Apparently her husband was quite handy with wood and built this nice bookshelf.

LADDERS ARE FUN
Good luck getting that to open in a 0 visibility situation…Nice find.
How about the lifesize doll…Could really make you think in a zero visability condition. As well who really is going to check to see if a bookcase opens up..
Curious, is the second floor a “real” second floor or is it attic space used for storage?
Old people do the oddest stuff, haha, but no this is just one more reason why primary and secondary search are so important and a GOOD secondary search might find this or it might not like DMAN72 said we always have ladders. Nice find guys, keep up the good work. Be safe, god bless.
Was the husband any relation to Anne Frank? Seriously though, whether it’s a second floor access hidden by a bookshelf or a wall that opens to a “hiding room” (friends have one), no telling what people have and do to their own home. Just have to be careful, focused, and vigilant in what we do and how we do it. Good find.
THANKS EVAN, YOU’VE BACKED ME A FEW TIMES ON THIS SITE. UNFORTUNATELY, UNLESS SOMEONE TELLS YOU THIS IS THERE, YOU WON’T KNOW IT UNTIL A SECONDARY SEARCH. ALSO CHECKING THE WHOLE HOUSE SHOULD REVEAL THIS STAIRCASE, i.e. IF YOU FIND A BASEMENT DOOR, YOU MAY SEE THE BOTTOM OF THESE STEPS. FOLLOW THE WALL AND BADABING. REMEMBER BALLS AND BRAWN ONLY GO SO FAR, FIREFIGHTING IS A THINKING GAME! (UNLESS YOU’RE AN ENGINE GUY(OR GIRL) )
DMan- Great thought process on looking for the stairs DOWN if you can’t find the stairs UP!
We had a job a few weeks ago in a duplex where we could tell there was a hidden room on Floor #2 based on floorplan layout, and finally ended up breaching into the space to access the fire running the rafter bays into the attic… Really wierd, but not so uncommon, especially here in the Northeast with our old 2 1/2 balloon frame mill housing and cut up Victorians and Colonials.
Be safe Brothers!
A good size up from the outside should reveal this second floor however it would be real difficult to find this staircase in a zero visibility situation, like it says above….thank god for ladders
what is there….instead of the life size doll is there anything else?
