Tim Anderson from Philadelphia Engine 16 sent in these pictures of an interesting building conversion. This structure was originally a old style church and is being converted into a residential structure. As you can see from the pictures this building becomes a mess of different building construction types. These set-ups frequently create a number of different hazards including multiple void spaces in walls and ceilings. Whenever a building is undergoing a renovation like this you owe it to yourself and your crew to go check it out. This should be seen as an open invitation for a free class. It’s one of the best times to learn building construction, and works great for an impromptu building construction class for the entire crew. You never know what you will find. wow. Brannigan just rolled in his grave 🙁
Now that’s ingenuity, how many void spaces can You build into a structure? This would definitely give a false sense of the need for a collapse zone. “That wood won’t fall far” but the stone wall behind it will.
Tim, can you tell us where this abomination is? I want to start preplanning where to put the Squrt for the extra…
Vinny Dunn has some excellent tactics for use at churches, look into it.
They are all over the country. I know there are at least six converts (no pun intended) in Boston
My sister lives in a similiar convert in Boston. The bad thing is that once these former comercial buildings become residential property, we can’t tour them or inspect them any longer. Which makes getting into them in the convert stages important. Remember to pass the information on, 20 years from now that building will still be there but you probably won’t.
Philly guys, this builing is in Manayunk at the intersection of Krams Ave and Manayunk Ave. I took these pics several weeks back so the place may be sealed up by now. I just walked up and some contractor there let me stroll me around by myself and take pictures. Its amazing what some people will do when you ask.
I guess we are gonna have to go with the ole carpenter on each apparatus gag again boys. This way we will know what we are gettin into when we show up to these wackadoodle structures!
Fisties fo lyfe!
Stay safe!
Must of had multiple contractors working this one.
Tim, another fine example of ‘Know the building, it is your enemy.’
