It’ll Be Just Fine

We are a little stumped about this one. It appears that this building is being supplemental shored by these rakers. Initially we thought that this was originally a party wall and that the building on the right side of the wall was no longer in place. That would make sense of why these supports are being used. But there is no real evidence of that being the case. Either way this is definitely something worth noting on the ever important 360 of the structure.

Just imagine how this building would act during a fire. Even during an exterior fire like a car or trash fire. What about the driver who just “taps” one of these supports? Any impact to these supports transfers force directly to the roof support structure, at least for the middle one that is not “protected” in any way. One would have to ask the question, was it protected at one time, and how much force did it take to “remove” the protection?

Keep in mind that the roof support structure (what ever type it may be) was not built to take an upright or lateral impact like this. It’s just one more reason to be observant even under non-fire conditions.

This occupancy was a takeout restaurant and small oriental market. It is currently un-occupied and vacant. -Jimm-

I have seen this done once. A bar in NJ did this a couple of years ago to expand the existing business. What they did was apply these rake shores to the header beam. Underneath the rake shore connection to the header beam, load bearing columns were constructed. These columns were significantly wide. I believe columns were approximately 3 feet by 3 feet. The sides of the building wall were removed to accomodate these columns.

Why such big columns you are thinking? The columns came out into the parking lot. The owner of the building proceeded to rest another header beam onto the new columns and added a lightweight steel truss building into the parking lot area. After enclosing the new building the temporary rake shores were removed and the new building was furnished. After furnishing the new space the owner removed the yellow wall and now his floor space was 3 times the size of the existing building!!! All this work took place without the owner losing one day of business!!!

The reason I am so familiar with this is that I believe this picture is of the Go-Go bar I used to frequent in NJ. The name of the bar is Breathless in Rahway NJ. Of course now I had 2 reasons to go to the bar at the time. One was keeping updated on building construction techniques and the other was keeping updated on female entertainment.

Had a small kitchen fire in this structure on the 2-3 corner about 6mo ago. If this is the structure, those were not there then. Set the truck up on the 34 corner and used some natural ventilation and made a small cut. The exterior of the building if in fact it is the same structure (corner of Mills and Colonial), it was a death trap
