Korea recently had a significant fire in a 610 year old landmark, the Great South Gate. The most interesting quote was actually made by the local police (38 seconds into the video.). Obviously we know nothing of the circumstances surrounding this fire, but it’s ironic to hear of a police department so knowledgeable in fire department operations.

Of course the fire dept waited too long….they should have hit it with water the second that the arsonist reached down with the match.
This structure was essentially a pile of nicely cribbed wood*; aside from being right there when it started there would be no stopping this blaze.
*Not to mention, old dried and painted.
that is about par for the corse with the P.D. they need to worry about fighting crime, and leave fighting fire up to us

I guess doughnuts are not very popular in Korea.
The press should have asked the cop who gave the interiview what his list number was for the Seoul FD.
Jackass.
We have problems with police in my district. They like to “force” entry and TRY to make a search but all they do is help the spread of the fire.
The cops are just pissed because they took the wrong test.
Police were just upset they couldn’t knock it down with their ABC dry chem from their car’s trunk. Honestly, I wonder how often that happens in foreign countries?
Can’t tell you how many rocking house fires we’ve rolled up on where there is a cop laying in the front yard, extinguisher empty beside him, and fire now blowing out the front door!
what were they going to use to get through that roof?? a wrecking ball?how were you giong to stand on a roof with that kind of slope?? i love when people make comments and since they have a badge their input must be worth something for the media to spread. that comment makes firefighters look inept.
Does anyone get it? The concept of this video is not to bash on cops, but to say that verticle ventilation DOES! work when done timely and efficiently. If it takes a wrecking ball to get a vent, than so be it. Quit hating and start learning.
This video offers a bit more detail (pre visible flame footage).
Apparently ‘hours’ went by without visible flame.

the youtube video makes it sound like the didn’t do a very good job putting the fire out the first time. shows importance of overhaul! when in doubt, rip it out. not sure of the Truck company tactic used by the Seoul fire department so we can’t monday morning quarterback it too bad. In my opinion no one should have been put on that roof. If they can cut it from the bucket fine, if not get it from the inside. Thats what those engine guys are for!
Here is another clip.

Since both the Fire and Police Departments fall under the Department of Defense in that country, it would seem like the officer had the opportunity, probably not the responsibility to make comment (brother versus brother, maybe).
As for the tactics used, lets see… Keep everyone of of the collapse zone, flow tons of water from a distance, new construction, 600 year old construction, it’s all gonna collapse sooner or later, put a member inside, maybe early, but do the Risk Benefit Analysis…….Building collapse is gonna happen and the brothers get to go home.

With that kind of fire load and duration of burning, Building collapse was gonna happen and the brothers got to go home. And that is a Good Thing
Do you know what Cops and Firefighters have in common??
They BOTH want to be firefighters.
Stay safe.
