Make It Work For You

We have said it before, ingenuity is an important part of our job. We should always be thinking of ways to make ourselves more effective on the fireground. One of the ways of doing that is by evaluating ways to modify our tools to increase their usage on the job. Many of the tools currently found on every fire apparatus in the world have their original roots as firehouse creations. Fortunately for us there are a few reputable tool companies that have taken these creations and made them available to everyone.

Firefighter Plunkett from a New York suburb fire department sent in a picture of his modified rex tool. The main benefit to this modification is that it makes the tool pocket size so it’s one less thing to carry. This particular modification allows for the tool to be utilized with a halligan and has both a slot for the adz and a collar for the pike. There are pros and cons to using the adz or pike depending on the situation. The nice thing about having the adz slot on the tool is having the ability to apply lateral force (side to side motion) when working the tool behind the lock. Rex tool modifications are nothing new, in fact, there is now a commercially made “lil rex” that is very similar to the homebrew version here but with just the pike collar. Regardless if this particular modification is right for you or your company, the idea is to think outside the box. There are many great tools already available for our profession, but with some simple modifications, you may be able to make the suit your own needs.

Modifying tools to suit company or personal preferences is a good thing. however, don’t forget the most important step, TRAIN WITH IT!

I do not have one of these tools in my area.

I am not even from NY. Will this tool still work in my state??

You must consult the Mfg for use outside of the ‘burbs due to patent restrictions.

    REX TOOL
A lock pulling tool, shaped like a “U” with sharp tapered blades that bite into lock cylinders of all shapes and sizes. Extra leverage and original head design provide the mechanical advantage to pull well secured lock cylinders. Opposite chisel end is used to drive rim locks after cylinders are removed.

It is very similar to the “A” tools in usage except the “U” shape allows you to grab lock cylinders better, and works on a wider range of locks. I have had the chance to use this tool in training and it worked awesome. Pulled 10 locks in about 45 seconds.
Here is a good article from Irons and Ladders with good picks of the rex and little rex (modified by FDNY Capt Morris)

Fortunatly for us there are a few reputable tool companies that have taken these creations and made them available to everyone with testing and safety standards recognized. Remember if you build it and it hurts someone you may be held accountable. Good idea you should submit for production.

Not sure how this would hurt someone…a little different than the homemade Crosby hooks (we’re talking about pulling cylinders here..) I’d be more concerned with the trapped civilian who didn’t survive because someone was afraid of potential liability. Liability has its place, but at what point does it start getting in the way of achieving our basic goals? I do, however, agree with submitting it for production, as it can improve upon a good innovation, along with making it available on a broader scale (and DMAN could finally get one and give Cinco a little rest).

All I can think about is Rex Kwon Do. I come from the school that if someone calls us and they do not answer, especially if its for smoke, force the door. It is excellent practice for the new guys and its a great no pressure learning environment.

You think anyone wants a roundhouse kick to the face when Im wearing these bad boys????

  11. Jon says:

Nate, you ever have one of those Rex tools in the squadron? lol
